Day 2 After breakfast visit the imposing Temple of Heaven where the Emperor came each year to intercede with the Gods for a good and plentiful harvest. Day 3 In the morning arrive in Xi’an, meet the local guide and transfer to visit the Terracotta Warriors Museum. The thousands of life size soldiers and horses were created to guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Emperor to unite China under his firm rule. Day 4 After breakfast take a flight from Xi'an to Lhasa. Meet the local guide and transfer to the hotel. After a rest, visit the Jokhang Temple, home of the most precious of the Buddha images in the region. Brought from Chang’an (what is now Xi’an ) by the Tang Princess Wen Cheng when she married Tibetan King Songsten Gampo, the Sakyamuni Buddha is truly magnificent. Day 5 Drive to Shigatze town via Campa La Pass and via the sacred Yamdrok Yumtso (or Yamdrok-tso), one of the three holiest lakes in Tibet, lies at Nhagartse, located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the southwest of Lhasa. According to legend, it was a fairy that descended to earth. Her husband followed suit and transformed into Mt. Kampala. Besides Mt. Kampala, Yamdrok Yumtso is also surrounded by Mt. Nyinchenkhasa, Mt. Chetungsu and Mt. Changsamlhamo. Befitting its mythical feminine origins, the turquoise blue lake has indescribable scenic beauty, prompting the Tibetans to compare it with the fairyland in heaven. The lake is also called Coral Lake of the Highlands due to its shape. The charming lake produces abundant aquatic life. On the surrounding expansive pasture, animals and birds flourish in huge numbers. There are dozens of islets in the lake, on which flocks of birds roost. During the herding season, the local herdsmen will ferry their herds of sheep across to these islets since there aren’t any predators on these islets, and leave them there until the onset of winter. Day 6 After breakfast visit Tashilunpo Monastery, which was founded in 1447 and is the largest Yellow Hat sect monastery in Tibet. Shigaste is Tibet’s 2nd most important city and Tashilunpo was the seat of the Panchen Lamas. Tashilunpo contains chortens, temples and the Panchen Lama’s palace. At its peak, Tashilunpo had more than 4,000 monks in its 4 monasteries. Upon the death of a Panchen Lama, it was the 4 abbots of these monasteries that would lead the search for his infant reincarnation. The monastery is a striking red, white and black Tibetan structure with a golden roof. Within the monastery there is a 5 story temple, which contains a 26 meters (86ft) sitting statue of the Maitreya Buddha. The statue was cast from 6,700 ounces of gold and over 115,000 kg of copper, making it the biggest copper Buddhist statue in the world. Day 7 Today you will see some of the wonderful sights of Lhasa, commencing with the magnificent Potala Palace, Tibet’s best-known landmark, which stands 117 meters high atop the Red Hill in Lhasa, was built 1,300-odd years ago in the 7th century. The 13-story palace, the world’s highest, is more than 3,700 meters above sea level and is a rare example of traditional Tibetan architecture. The Potala Palace covers an area of 360,000 square meters, and measures 360 meters east-west and 270 meters north-south. It features a combination of stone-and-wood Tibetan watchtowers and Han Chinese palace halls with traditional beams and pillars, golden roofs and sunk panels. Courtyards and winding corridors were arranged to suit the location. While the major part of the palace complex is highlighted, subordinate architectural groups form a jagged, interlocking pattern providing more space than one would expect, an achievement recognized in the history of architecture. | (B/D) Overnight in Lhasa |

Day 9 Shanghai is a city that must be seen and appreciated. You will see something of its history at the Shanghai Museum on People’s Square with its fine collection of cultural relics. Visit the Yuyuan Garden. Laid out in the 16th century by a Ming official, this small (2 hectares) garden is a delight of pools, pavilions and rock gardens. Strolling through the bazaar surrounding the garden, you will find lines of stores that sell traditional Chinese arts and crafts. Visit the Jade Buddha Temple, built in 1882 can be found on Anyuan Road. The temple has 2 jade statues of the Sakyamuni Buddha, one seated and one reclining, brought from Myanmar. The seated Buddha is 1.9 meters (6ft) tall and was carved out of a single piece of white jade and is wearing a robe inlaid with precious jewels. The temple also houses a number of ancient sculptures, rare paintings and Buddhist scriptures. The Bund, one of the most famous thoroughfares in China and here you will see a collection of buildings dating from the 1930’s displaying their western influence and fulfilling the role of the commercial heart of Shanghai. Leaving the ancient for the modern you visit the TV Tower of the Oriental Pearl situated in the thriving Pudong area of the city dominated by the 88-storey Jin Mao building.
