As a famous eity for sightseeing tourism,
Hangzhou has been paying a lot of attention to its tourist environment and trying to match it with international standards. Hangzhou's major tourist attractions all have direction signs in both Chinese and English.
Along the 32 main roads from the urban area to airports, railway stations, wharf, there are more than 500 standard, accurate, and eye-catching road signs in both Chinese and English, with more than 1,000 large traffic signs in both Chinese and English replaced or added, facilitating both Chinese and foreign visitors in Hangzhou. Many improvements have been made for the usage of Chinese and English signs in tourist guide maps, direction signs, and attraction notes.
In 1999, the planning departments of the city have built 589 signs in both Chinese and English along the 81 roads in the charge of the city government, with 70 road signs replaced for main roads of adjoining districts.
