Also called Shajiao Mountain or the Shengsha Mountain, Mingsha Mountain stretches from the Mogao Grottoes in the east and to the Danghekou in the west. It is over 40KM long from the west to east and 20KM wide from north to south, with a highest peak being 1715 meters above the sea level. The whole mountain is formed by numerous sand grains in five different colors, which includes red, yellow, white, black, and orange. The rolling hills are beautifully shaped like a "zigzagging dragon" with main peaks as sharp as blades. Sliding down from the top of the mountain, most people will hear great noises like booming thunders, hence the name Mingsha Mountain, i.e. the Sand Mountain.
The Crescent Moon Spring lies in the north of Mingsha Mountain and is encircled by it.
The spring is thus named because it shapes like a crescent. Surrounded by sand in all directions, the spring hasn't been buried by the sand or even become dried-up. Isn't it a natural wonder? It is said that in spring, there are Qixing grass and Tiebei fish, which can help people attain longevity, so the spring is also called the "spring of medicine".
Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring is a place of interests for its "the mountain and the spring are co-existing, the sand and the water have been growing together" for hundreds of years. "The mountain can give off sounds for it has soul; the spring is more beautiful for it has spirit." The uniqueness of its landscape is rare in the whole country. Put down on the list of "40 best tourist resorts in China", Mingsha Mountain Together with Crescent Moon Spring is also one of important state-level scenic spots.
