Wowa Pond is also called Shouchanghai. A story from history books of
Dunhuang goes that, a prisoner named Bao Lizhang was once farming in Dunhuang during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty. One day, he captured a wild horse by trick. And he contributed the horse to the Emperor. And the Emperor thought the horse was a blessing from venerable Taiyi God, for the horse was very strong and outstanding. So he named the horse "Taiyi heaven Horse" and produced a "Song of Taiyi". Hence Wowa Pond and "Heaven Horse" were renowned all over the country. Men of letters of different dynasties came here and sang praises of them one after another.
