Changsha City, around the Huilong Hill, the superficial layer of the earth surface is composed of red soil. Underneath is a layer of sand and gravel, which is good for water penetration. Geologically, it is called the stratum of well with sand. Further down, the ground layer is composed of water-proof plate rocks. And there the ground has sunk to become a water tank or reservoir. The White-sand Well, as one of its outlets, had only one opening at first. By the end of the Ming Dynasty, the fountain water running out of the opening was divided into two wells. Later, two more wells were formed. Around them, shallow water trenches were dug to channel the water. According to the "Record of White-Sand Well," "a fountain comes out of the underground of the city, it is neither over spilling nor drying up… " The sector-shaped well platform was built along the curve of the hill. The water is clear, cool and sweet. On sooner have you drained the water from the well, than it is filled again immediately, whether it is the season of drought or flood.
