Xiling Snow Mountains, approved to be a national scenic resort in January 1994, are 90km from Chengdu, and cover a total area of 482.8 square km. The mountains feature primitive, simple, and magnificent sights. The Big Snow Mountain is 5,346 meters above sea level, silver like and reaching up to the sky. The snow does not melt all the year round, and even in Chengdu city, one could get a glimpse of her snow-white magnificence. When Dufu, the well-known poet of Tang Dynasty, lived in Chengdu, he was so excited by the sight that he wrote the famous poem describing it, "looking out of the window, one sees the thousand-year snow on Xiling Mountain; looking out of the door, one sees the ships of the East Wu State". Inside the resort, visitors can enjoy the three miracles including the "sunlight gilded mountain," "border of yin and yang" and "forest Buddha light" which are rarely seen in the world.
The climate here is divided into four distinct seasons at the same time as demonstrated by its vegetation on mountain slopes.
